North West Mounted Police
2009
The RCMP - the Royal Canadian Mounted Police - was formed in 1920 by the merger of the Royal North West Mounted Police (RNWMP, founded 1904) with the
Dominion Police (founded 1868). The former was originally named the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP, founded 1873), and was granted the prefix Royal by King
Edward VII in 1904. Much of the present organization's symbolism has been inherited from its history, including the distinctive scarlet serge tunic, paramilitary heritage,
regimental status and mythos as a frontier force.
